Tips and Tricks
Stay Positive – The more positive you are, the more interested your canine companion will be in working with you. Remember, nobody likes to work with a sourpuss!
Distractions - Begin working in an area with little-to-no distractions. The less your puppy has to look at, the more likely they are to respond to you! You can always start including more distractions as your pup begins responding to their name.

Troubleshooting
Your Dog Does Not Respond To You Calling Out Their Name – Try using different tones of voice to get the desired effect. Many dogs respond to higher pitched “excited” voices better than lower pitches at first.
Your Dog Does Not Respond To You Calling Out Their Name – Check the area. If your dog is interested in a specific item remove it (or yourselves) from the area until your puppy is ready to respond despite that distraction.

Name Recognition Exercise
- First find a small, quiet space for you and your dog to work in. The less distractions you have, the quicker your dog will begin responding!
- With a reward in your hand, call the dog’s name. The moment they turn their head, praise them and reward them immediately. Do this 1-10 times, or until your dog responds quickly each time their name is called.
- After 6-10 repetitions, the reward should be removed from the hand. Call the dog’s name, then praise the dog as you reach for the treat reward each time.
- When your dog is responding to their name consistently, begin varying the reward. For instance, call your dog’s name, then reward with a treat. The next time you call your dog’s name, reward with praise and petting.
- Slowly reduce the amount of treats you give as rewards, until your dog will consistently listen to their name with only praise as a reward.
